005 College of Humanities and Communication

0501 Chinese Language and Literature

The Department of Chinese was founded in 1956, and was awarded the master's degree in Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature in 2003, the master's degree in Chinese Language and Literature and Ancient Chinese Literature in 2006, and the first-level master's degree in 2011.

There are 44 full-time teachers, including 11 professors, 16 associate professors, and 36 teachers with doctoral degrees. There is one leading talent of National Ten Thousand People Plan, one member of Zhejiang Culture and History Research Institute, four talents of "151 Talent Project" of Zhejiang Province, five young and middle-aged discipline leaders of Zhejiang University, three Zhejiang East Scholars and Zhejiang East Young Scholars of Ningbo University.

In recent years, he has received more than 130 scientific research projects, including 1 major project, 1 key project and 15 general projects from the National Social Science Foundation of China. He has received 21 awards, including one second-class award from the Ministry of Education, one first-class award from the provincial government, one second-class award and three third-class awards. He has published more than 300 academic papers and more than 40 books.

Prof. Zhao Shugong, the head of the department, is one of the leading talents in philosophy and social sciences of the National "Ten Thousand People Plan", a cultural master and one of the "Four Batch" talents, a first-level trainer of 151 talents in Zhejiang Province, and a Zhendong scholar of Ningbo University. He is mainly engaged in the research of ancient literature and ancient literary theory, published 7 books, selected as one of the National Library of Philosophical and Social Sciences, presided over one major project of National Social Science Foundation, four general projects and late projects, won the first prize of academic awards at provincial and ministerial level once and other two times. The Department of Chinese Language has the following secondary disciplines: Literature and Art, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Chinese Language and Literature, Ancient Chinese Literature, Contemporary Chinese Literature, Literature and New Media, and Chinese Classical Literature.

01 Literature and Art

There are three research directions: literary aesthetics, ancient Chinese literary theory and criticism, and western literary theory. With literary theory, literary categories and literary aesthetics as the research objects, we have achieved a number of influential results in the fields of ancient literary theory criticism and western literary theory research. The main researchers include Prof. Zhao Shugong, Prof. Yin Dexiang, Associate Prof. Ge Tibiao, Associate Prof. Xue Xianchao, Associate Prof. Zhou Jingyao, etc.

02 Linguistics and Applied Linguistics

The Department of Linguistics and Applied Linguistics has three research areas: Vocabulary and Grammar, Discourse and Pragmatics, and Chinese Language Teaching. The main research areas are modern Chinese vocabulary, grammar, discourse, rhetoric, comparison of Chinese and foreign languages, teaching of Chinese as a native language and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The main researchers are Prof. Nie Renfa, Prof. Ruan Yongmei, Prof. He Qingqiang, and Associate Prof. Wang Xiaohui.

03 Chinese Linguistics

The department has three research directions: Modern Chinese, Middle Chinese, and Chinese dialects, with the main research content of documentary languages, colloquial languages, and Wu and Gan dialects since the Middle Ages, and has formed characteristics in related research fields and achieved a series of results. In recent years, he has highlighted the research on the history of Chinese vocabulary in special books and categories and the study of Zhejiang dialects. 04 Ancient Chinese Literature

05 Chinese Modern and Contemporary Literature

There are three research directions: the study of 20th century literary trends and genres, the study of 20th century literary categories, and the study of 20th century writers' works. The main research focuses on modern and contemporary thought and literary transformation, women's literature/vernacular literature, female folklore and female image construction in the perspective of literary folklore, 20th century novels and new poetry, and the historicization of contemporary literary research and its methods and paths. The main researchers are Prof. Nan Zhigang, Prof. Zhou Chunying, Prof. Mao Haiying, Associate Prof. Hu Suzhen, and Associate Prof. Shaanxi Qing.

 

060200 Chinese History

The Department of History was established in 1982, and was granted the right to confer master's degree in the second level of specialized history in 2003, and the right to confer master's degree in the first level of Chinese history in 2006. The department is the main academic force of Zhejiang University's Zhejiang East Culture Research Institute, and the main support unit of Zhejiang Province's key cultural innovation team, the Ocean Culture Research Innovation Team. Under the Department of Chinese History, there are five secondary degree programs: Theory and History of History, Specialized History, Ancient Chinese History, Modern Chinese History, and History of Chinese and Foreign Relations.

(1) Theory of History and History of History

There are three directions: Theory of History, History of Chinese History, and History of Chinese Fangzhiology, which are under the charge of Professor Qian Mowei, Associate Professor Tong Jie, and Associate Professor Shen Songping respectively. This degree program focuses on the study of Chinese historical texts in various historical periods and the correct evaluation of historical thoughts and schools of history in each historical stage. The main research areas are: the historiography of the Six Dynasties, the Ming and Qing dynasties historical tradition in eastern Zhejiang, local historiography in Chinese cultural history, public historiography and the current trends of historical development, and the collation and study of maritime documents. These research contents are closely related to the regional culture of Ningbo and also belong to international frontier academic issues, and they are also closely related to the compilation of local histories today; therefore, the main characteristics of this degree program are regional, frontier and practical. The degree program focuses on the study of political history, economic history, cultural history and the history of regional social changes in eastern Zhejiang. The main research area is the study of "Zhejiang Studies". It mainly studies the cultural thinking of Zhejiang studies in the context of the new era, summarizes the experience and lessons of the development of Zhejiang studies, examines the inheritance and innovation of Zhejiang studies, the conflict and exchange between Zhejiang studies and foreign cultures, the professionalization and popularization of Zhejiang studies. These researches are closely related to Ningbo region and international frontier academic issues, and also involve many disciplines; therefore, the main characteristics of this degree program are: regional, frontier and comprehensive. (4) Modern Chinese History

The Department of Modern Chinese History is composed of three areas, namely, economic and social changes in China since modern times, Sino-foreign relations and intellectual and cultural exchanges in modern times, and the history of the Republic of China, which are under the charge of Professor Wang Ruicheng, Professor Chen Junjing and Researcher Sun Shangen respectively. The degree program systematically studies the history of China since the Opium War and focuses on exploring the politics, society, economy, finance and finance, foreign relations, ideology and culture of Zhejiang in that period. The main areas of research include the transformation of Ningbo as a typical modern city, the Republican figures represented by Chiang Kai-shek, and the status of the "Ningbo Gang" in modern Chinese history. There are three departments in the history of East Asian transportation, Japanese history and East Asian cultural history, which are under the charge of Professor Gong Yingyan, Professor Liu Hengwu and Associate Professor Zhou Liping respectively. This degree program focuses on the history of ancient China and East Asia, the history of China-Europe relations since modern times, and the history of Sino-American relations. The main research areas are: the study of the ancient Maritime Silk Road with a focus on Ningbo, the study of maritime history with a focus on the East China Sea, and the study of the history of Sino-European relations based on rare foreign language documents. These issues are both closely related to the Ningbo region and are international frontier academic issues, and also involve many disciplines such as Chinese and foreign documents, archaeological relics, art modelling and maritime maps, etc. Therefore, the main features are: regional, frontier and comprehensive. The Department of Chinese History at Ningbo University is the only discipline engaged in historical and cultural research in Ningbo, and has undertaken almost all the important projects on history and culture in Ningbo. The Department of Chinese History is unique in the province for its research on local history and has a large influence in China. Master of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) is a professional master's degree program approved by the Ministry of Education of China in 2007, which aims to cultivate high-level, applied Chinese teaching professionals who can teach Chinese as a second/foreign language and spread Chinese culture in China or other countries in accordance with the new situation of Chinese international education.

Ningbo University started to recruit foreign students in 1997, and has a history of more than 20 years in Chinese international education. The university has a team of highly educated and qualified teachers with international perspectives in Chinese international education. It also has undergraduate majors in Chinese Language and Literature and Chinese Language, and was qualified to enroll in Master of Chinese as a Foreign Language Education (MTCSOL) in 2018. The Department of Journalism and Communication was established in 1996, and was awarded the master's degree of "Literature and New Media" in 2013 and the master's degree of Journalism and Communication in 2018. The degree is dedicated to cultivating senior applied talents with socialist concept of journalism and communication and mastering modern journalism and communication skills for the press and propaganda departments of state organs and institutions, local news media and advertising companies. There are 8 professors, 10 associate professors and 15 teachers with doctoral degrees in this degree program. Prof. Ning Hailin, the head of the degree program, is the leader of young and middle-aged disciplines in Zhejiang University and the vice president of the Communication Society of Zhejiang Province. He is mainly engaged in the research on the theory and application of visual communication, presiding over and completing two National Social Science Foundation projects and one major provincial project, and publishing more than 50 papers.
