The Department of Chinese History at Ningbo University was founded in 1982, and in 1999, the Specialized History under the Department of Chinese History was approved to be a key discipline of the province, and in 2004, it was turned into a key discipline of the province (Class B), and in the same year, it successfully applied for the master's degree, and was granted the right to confer the master's degree of the first level discipline in 2010, and became a key discipline of Zhejiang Province in 2012, and the Department of Chinese History was approved to set up a master's degree in cultural relics and museums in 2021. In 2021, the Department of Chinese History was approved to establish a special master's degree in cultural relics and museums, which is the only special master's degree of its kind in provincial universities other than Zhejiang University. The Department of Chinese History is not only the main academic force of Zhejiang Province Philosophy and Society Key Research Base “Ningbo University Zhedong Culture Research Institute”, but also the main supporting unit of Zhejiang Province Key Cultural Innovation Team “Marine Culture Research Innovation Team”. In addition, the fourth round of “Ningbo Zhedong Culture Research Base”, “Ningbo Republican Culture Research Base” and the fifth round of “Ningbo Zhedong History and Culture Research Base” are all settled in this discipline. The strategic cooperation project between Ningbo Municipal Government and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), “Zhedong Culture and the Construction of Ningbo Cultural City”, is also mainly supported by the Department of Chinese History, and four professors of the Department of Chinese History have become doctoral supervisors of CASS. There are 52 teachers in this degree program, including 22 professors and 22 associate professors, 49 of whom have doctoral degrees, and 32 of whom have overseas study or working experience. In addition, the degree program has 23 other full-time staff, including 6 senior titles. Professor Gong Yingyan, the leader of the discipline, was selected as the second level of 151 talents of the new century in Zhejiang Province, the doctoral supervisor of the two degree programs of Chinese history and world history in Zhejiang University, and also serves as the member of the Literary and Historical Museum of Zhejiang Province, the deputy director of the Teaching Guidance Committee of Universities and Philosophy Classes of Zhejiang Province, the vice president of the Chinese Overseas Transportation History Research Association, the member of the Digitization Committee of the Map and Cultural Heritage of the International Cartographic Association. He is mainly engaged in the history of Sino-foreign cultural exchanges, the history of cartography, and the history and culture of Zhejiang.
The discipline of Chinese History of Ningbo University is the only discipline engaged in the research of history and culture in the whole Ningbo City, which has uniqueness and irreplaceability. As far as the whole Zhejiang Province is concerned, this discipline, together with Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Normal University, constitutes the first square of history and culture research, and each of them presents its own characteristics and has advantages over the other. The discipline insists on “based on the local, facing the whole country, going to the world”. In the past five years, this application point has won seven awards at provincial and ministerial levels or above; so far, it has undertaken a total of 42 projects of the National Social Science Foundation of China (five major projects and four key projects). Teachers of Chinese History have published more than 200 papers in journals such as Chinese Social Sciences, Historical Studies, World History, Studies in Modern History, Studies in Historical Theory, People's Daily, Guangming Daily, etc., and a number of papers have been reprinted in full in Xinhua Wenzhi Digest, Chinese Social Sciences Digest, NPC Reprinting Materials, and more than 100 monographs have been published.
The Department of Chinese History is committed to cultivating high-level talents urgently needed by the country by focusing on students and establishing morality as its mission. In recent years, graduate students of Chinese History have been admitted to Tsinghua University, Nankai University, Fudan University, Nanjing University, East China Normal University, Central China Normal University, University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and other famous universities for doctoral studies. Students' Party building is in the forefront of the whole university, and has won the titles of “National Model Branch of Party Building Work”, “National May 4 Red Flag Group Branch”, and “Model Group Branch for Practicing Socialist Core Values in National Colleges and Universities”. “Students have broken many records in science and innovation, and won the gold medal of Challenge Cup and the first prize of Provincial Competition. In recent years, the discipline of Chinese history has been accelerating the pace of internationalization, and has established long-term academic exchanges and cooperative relationships with the Hoover Institution of Stanford University, Waseda University of Japan, Shizuoka Prefectural University of Japan, and Kyungpook National University of South Korea.
The Department of Chinese History consists of four research directions: Ancient Chinese History, Modern Chinese History, Specialized Chinese History, and Historical Theory and History.
(1) Ancient Chinese History
There are three directions within the program: Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, North and South Dynasties, Sui and Tang History, Song and Yuan History, and Ming and Qing History. The program focuses on the historical process, boundary changes, institutional civilization, people's life, ideology and culture in different periods of time, and systematically researches the history of China from the pre-Qin Dynasty to the Opium War, so as to comprehensively reveal the fusion of the Chinese nation and the evolution of the ancient Chinese civilization. The main research areas include: early maritime culture research based on new archaeological discoveries; Buddhism and Taoism research using textual interpretation and image interpretation as the main method; Ming and Qing history research focusing on the organization of maritime literature. Compulsory courses offered include History of Ancient History Disciplines, Study of Ancient Social History Literature, and Special Studies in Ancient Chinese History.
(2) Modern Chinese History
There are three directions in Modern Chinese Economy and Social Changes, Modern Sino-Foreign Relations and Ideological and Cultural Exchanges, and History of the Republic of China. The degree program systematically studies Chinese history since the Opium War, and focuses on exploring the politics, society, economy, finance and economics, foreign relations, ideology and culture of Zhejiang in that period. The main research areas include: the transformation of modern port cities represented by Ningbo; the history of merchant gangs focusing on the modern “Ningbo Gang”; and the transformation of traditional scholarship focusing on modern Zhejiang scholars. Compulsory courses include the study of the history of modern Chinese political thought, the study of modern Chinese economic and social history, and the study of the history of foreign relations in modern China.
(3) Specialized History of China
Containing the history of Sino-foreign relations, historical geography, the study of Chinese art history, within the three directions of regional social change, regional cultural history, regional politics and foreign relations. The degree program focuses on the study of political history, economic history, cultural history and history of regional social change in East Zhejiang. The main research areas are: the study of the ancient maritime silk road focusing on Ningbo; the study of maritime history centering on the East China Sea; and the protection of maritime tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Compulsory courses offered include the study of regional economic history, the study of regional cultural history, and the study of regional social history.
(4) Theory and History of History
There are three directions within the program: Historical Theory, History of Chinese Historiography, and History of Chinese Fangzhi. This degree program focuses on correctly analyzing the historiographical thought and schools of historiography in each historical stage through the study of historiographical texts of each historical period in China. The main research areas are: traditional historiography of Zhejiang and its modern transformation; traditional Fangzhi genealogy and its contemporary development; history of Western historiography and historiographical trends. Compulsory courses offered include Theory and Methods of Historical Research, Research on the History of Chinese Historiography, and Research on the History of the Development of Fangzhi.
