Approved in 2021, the Master's Program in Museum of Ningbo University, which was originally the Master's Program in Cultural Relics and Museums, was changed to its current name after the discipline adjustment of the Ministry of Education in 2023. Ningbo University Museum Professional Master's Degree Program is currently the only museum professional degree-granting program in East Zhejiang, and one of the few museum professional talent training bases in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. The degree program emphasizes both theory and practice, and the persons in charge of each direction and the professional teachers have strong professional practice ability and education and teaching level. The degree program also employs more than 20 museum curators and research librarians in the industry as part-time master's supervisors, and is committed to building a “dual-teacher” faculty structure.
Ningbo University Museum Master's degree program is based in Zhejiang, covering the whole country, the school positioning for the cultivation of theory and practice of the professional master's degree students, the theoretical aspect of the basic theories and basic knowledge of museology, and history, archaeology, art and science and technology and other comprehensive knowledge, in order to cultivate the museum research and management of the museum career and other aspects of the ability; practical aspects of the emphasis is on museum exhibitions and displays, management and conservation of collections and other aspects of the practical application of the ability. The practical aspect emphasizes the ability of practical application in museum exhibition display, management and collection protection.
The cultivation objectives of the Master of Museums program are: ① to cultivate applied high-level talents in the field of culture and museums who have mastered the basic principles of Marxism and the theoretical system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and who are well qualified in both morality and aptitude. (ii) To emphasize both knowledge education and ability cultivation, so that students will be able to be competent for higher level business or management in the field of museums. Graduates can be engaged in professional research, management and operation, promotion and publicity in various museums at all levels and in all kinds of museums, collection management institutions, research institutions, publishing institutions, community organizations, museum exhibition design companies and other industries and fields.
The key directions of the master's degree program in museums include: museum exhibition planning; museum education and services; museum management; digital museums, etc. Relying on the resources of Ningbo Museum, China Port Museum and many thematic museums, the program carries out research in the fields of thematic categories of museums, exhibition design, collection management and design of cultural and creative products, and realizes the immersive interaction of museum resources by combining with the modern museum technology. In addition, the degree program employs renowned museum curators and research librarians from domestic and overseas to teach and hold lectures to deepen graduate students' understanding of the current situation of museums.
There are 17 teachers in the degree program, including 13 senior titles, 100% of whom are PhDs, 3 of whom have obtained doctoral degrees from abroad, and 15 of whom have overseas working and studying experiences. In recent years, teachers of the degree program have presided over one major national social science project, one key project, more than 20 other national, provincial and ministerial projects, and more than 30 horizontal projects; they have published more than 70 papers in core journals and newspapers such as China Social Sciences, Historical Studies, Archaeological Journal, Academic Monthly, etc., and many of which have been reprinted in Xinhua Digest, NPC Newspaper and Magazine Photocopying Materials, and 10 books have been published. He has published more than 10 books.
The person in charge of the degree program is Prof. Tong Jie, Ph.D., selected as one of the leading and top-notch talents in Ningbo. He is currently the deputy director of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences of Ningbo University, the secretary-general of the Zhedong Cultural Research Institute of Zheijang Philosophy and Social Sciences Key Research Base of Zheijang Province, and the director of the Research Base of Zhedong History and Culture of Ningbo, and the director of the Federation of Social Sciences Circles of Zheijang Province, the director of the Research Branch of History Theory of the Historical Society of China, and the director of the Historical Society of Zheijang Province. At present, he is mainly engaged in the research of Zhedong archaeological culture and local museums, presiding over the major projects of the National Social Science Fund, the major projects of the Zheijiang Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Planning, and the scientific research projects of the national universities and colleges, etc. He has published more than 20 papers in the journals and newspapers of the “Theoretical Research of History”, “Monthly Journal of History”, “Collected Journal of History”, “Historical Research of History”, “Zhejiang Social Science”, “Guangming Daily”, “Chinese Social Science Journal”, etc., of which several papers have been published by the Several of them have been reprinted in full text in China Social Science Digest and NPC Reprinting Materials.
Museology is a humanities discipline with diversified contents and rich connotations. Its content has strong intersectionality and inclusiveness, and the combination of “literature” and “science” is the distinctive cultivation feature of this specialty. The program is suitable for both liberal arts students with good theoretical background in literature and history, and for science and engineering students with knowledge of natural sciences such as mathematics, physics and chemistry.
Graduates of the degree program can enter various museums and display units, tourism, press and publishing, educational institutions, cultural and creative industries and other fields. In addition, the graduates can also take the doctoral degree in related majors of top universities at home and abroad for further study.
