The Master of International Chinese Language Education program was officially approved by the Ministry of Education of China in 2007. Its purpose is to train high-level application-oriented professionals who can meet the needs of the new situation in international Chinese education, and who are capable of teaching Chinese as a second language/foreign language and promoting Chinese culture in China or other countries.
Ningbo University began enrolling international students in 1997, boasting over 20 years of experience in international Chinese education. The university has a highly educated faculty team with international perspectives in the field of international Chinese education. It also offers undergraduate programs in Chinese Language and Literature and Chinese Language. In 2018, the university was granted the qualification to enroll students in the MICE program. This program enrolls both domestic and international students, creating an integrated learning environment. It is currently the only MICE program in Ningbo and one of the few high-quality resources for training Chinese and international talents in Zhejiang Province.
The program at Ningbo University leverages the strengths of the first-level discipline of Chinese Language and Literature in the School of Humanities and Communication. It also integrates the advantages of other disciplines such as Education, Foreign Languages, and History. The program utilizes the university's platform for international cooperation in education and its high-quality domestic and international faculty resources. The program emphasizes the combination of theory and practice, focusing on developing students' Chinese teaching skills and international communication abilities.
The MICE program maintains close teaching relationships with Confucius Institutes in countries such as Iceland and Madagascar, and has established partnerships with many foreign universities including the University of Angers and the University of Artois in France, as well as universities in the United States and Canada. The program has seven international Chinese teaching practice bases and twenty Chinese cultural practice bases both domestically and internationally, providing excellent internship conditions. Additionally, the program was approved as the "Zhejiang Province International Students National Education Master Studio" by the Provincial Department of Education in 2023, and in 2024, it was approved to establish the "Ningbo Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Association Academic Committee" and the "Ningbo University Folklore Culture and Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Research Center," marking a new level in the program's internationalization and professionalization.
The program currently has 25 faculty members, including 10 professors and 10 associate professors. Twenty-one faculty members have obtained doctoral degrees, and most have studied or visited internationally renowned universities. Several faculty members have served as directors or teachers at overseas Confucius Institutes. In recent years, the program's faculty has undertaken more than 50 national and provincial-level projects and over 30 horizontal projects. They have published over 100 papers in core journals and more than 10 books, and their research achievements have received over 20 awards for outstanding achievements at various levels.
