History of the Department
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature was established in 1956 and is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted humanities disciplines at Ningbo University. In 2003, the Chinese language and literature discipline was granted the right to award master's degrees in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, and in 2006, it was granted the right to award master's degrees in Chinese philology and ancient Chinese literature. In 2011, it was granted the right to award master's degrees in first-level disciplines. The Chinese Language and Literature program was selected as a provincial first-class undergraduate program in 2019, and in 2021, it was approved as a national first-class undergraduate program construction site.
Faculty
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature currently has 46 full-time faculty members, including 11 professors, 16 associate professors, and 19 lecturers. Among them, 42 have doctoral degrees. The current head of the department is Associate Professor Zhou Jingyao, with Deputy Heads Luo Zipeng and Li Xiaoqin.
Professor Fu Daobin, the discipline leader, is a renowned scholar, doctoral superviso and the vice Chairman of the Chinese Literary Critics Association. He has authored works such as Bell Sounds of Late Tang Dynasty, Essays on Poetry Outside Poetry and The Paradise of Singers.
Scientific Research
The Department of Chinese Language and Literature boasts two university-level research centers: the Institute of Classical Chinese Studies and the Modern Poetics Research Center. The main research features of the discipline are threefold:
1. Classical studies. This area gathers faculty specializing in ancient literature and classical Chinese. The focus is on the study of early Chinese classical manuscripts, classical theory, overseas Chinese classical studies, documents of Zhedong culture, ancient literary theory, and textual collation research.
2. Modern Poetics Research: This research area brings together faculty from literary theory, ancient literature, and modern and contemporary literature to focus on the study of literary concepts and thoughts. The primary methodology involves keyword research and comparative poetics, examining core concepts in ancient and Western literary theories.
3. Language and Culture Research: This area primarily involves faculty specializing in dialects, classical Chinese, modern Chinese, and teaching Chinese as a foreign language. The focus is on the study of the Chinese language itself and its applications.
In recent years, the department has undertaken over 130 research projects, including one major project and one key project funded by the National Social Science Fund, and 15 general projects. The department has received 21 awards, including one second prize from the Ministry of Education, one first prize, one second prize, and three third prizes from the provincial government, and multiple awards for outstanding achievements in philosophy and social sciences from Ningbo City. More than 350 academic papers have been published, along with over 50 books.
Subjects and Programs
The graduate training is divided into five research directions: Literary Theory, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, Chinese Philology, Ancient Chinese Literature, and Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature. The graduate program lasts for three years and enrolls 22-26 graduate students annually.
01 Literature and Art Theory
Its main research contents include ancient Chinese literature theory, modern Chinese literature theory and western literary theory. Significant achievements have been made in the research of ancient Chinese literary theory, modern Chinese culture, Western literary theory, and other related fields in recent years. The main researchers include Professor Yin Dexiang, Liang Qingbiao, Associate Professor Ge Tibiao, Xue Xianchao, Zhou Jingyao and Dr. Zhu Yeqi, Cheng Jingmu.
02 Linguistics and Applied Linguistics
Its main research contents include modern Chinese vocabulary, grammar, discourse, rhetoric, comparison between Chinese and foreign languages. Significant achievements have been made in research of modern Chinese vocabulary, grammar, discourse, rhetoric, and comparison between Chinese and foreign languages.The main researchers include Professor Nie Renfa, Ruan Yongmei, He Qingqiang, Associate Professor Wang Xiaohui, and Dr. Li Xiaoqin, Xia Huanle, Lin Wei.
03 Chinese Philology
Its main research contents include modern Chinese, mediaeval Chinese, Chinese dialects, the language of ancient literature, colloquial words and characters. Significant achievements have been made in research of ancient Chinese language, colloquial expressions, as well as Wu and Gan dialects. The main researchers include Professor Song Wenbing, Tian Qitao, Xiao Ping and Dr. Xie Ming.
04 Ancient Chinese Literature
Its main research contents include literature of Tang and Song dynasties, literature of Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, regional Culture and literature. Significant achievements have been made in the Research of Tang dynasty literature, Ming and Qing novels, regional culture and literature. The main researchers include Associate Professor Zhang Ping, Yang Fengqin, Ao Yunmei, Li Ciyao, Luo Zipeng and Dr. Lin Zhen, Zhang Yao, Wu Yuchen, Yang Wenyu.
05 Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature
Its main research contents include modern and contemporary thought and literary transformation, feminist literature; rural Literature, 20th Century novels and new poetry. Significant achievements have been made in the transformation of modern thought and literature, women's literature, the construction of female customs and images from the perspective of literary folklore, and the historicization and methodology of contemporary literary research.The main researchers include Professor Zhang Weidong, Mao Haiying, Associate Professor Hu Suzhen, Shan Qing and Dr. Zhang Tao, Li Yang .
